Since conspiracy theories seem to be hot this fall, I decided to add mine. No, not really. I simply want to talk about how to deal with things that are outside our control.
We deal with this on all levels such as a lawyer relying on a jury to deliver a verdict (a concept that, as an European, strikes me as extremely odd, but be that as it may) or a hedge fund manager dealing with the stock market.
Two weekends ago, a client of mine did not get a fair placing at a competition and was rather frustrated which is understandable, if you put in ten months of work and food deprivation, just to get robbed by politics.
What is to be done?
To quote the General von Moltke: did you do everything humanly possible to prepare? If the answer is yes, then you can move on. If the answer is no, then go back to the drawing board.
Secondly, as much as we dislike to admit it, things also break into our favor from time to time (unless you are Roy Sullivan who got struck by lightening 7(!!) times).
However, things will not break in your favor if you quit after the first bit of adversity.
Till next time!
Maik
